Parshavi Chopra’s stunning leg-spin bowling led India to a seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second Super Six match of the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Potchefstroom.
After losing to Australia just one day before, they demonstrated tenacity and resilience.

India knew they needed to beat Sri Lanka convincingly in order to advance to the tournament’s semi-finals.
Chopra bowled a spell of precision and deception, taking four wickets for just five runs in four brilliant overs that included a maiden.

Among them was Sri Lanka captain Vishmi Gunaratne, who was bowled while advancing down the wicket.
She attempted traditional leg-spin, but Chopra served up a googly, and the ball slipped past Gunaratne and crashed into off-stump.

After being named Player of the Match in the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup 2023 Super 6 match between India and Sri Lanka at JB Marks Oval, Parshavi Chopra of India poses with Max Jordaan, LOC Government and Stakeholder Manager.

At the time, Sri Lanka’s captain was on 25 (28 balls, two boundaries), while the rest of her side had collapsed around her, having been inserted by India.
Chopra’s incisive spell reduced Sri Lanka to 59 for nine in their allotted 20 overs, with only Umaya Rathnayake (13 from 36 balls) reaching double figures with the bat.

India’s determination to recover quickly was evident in their miserliness; only one wide was given away in the extras column.
Mannat Kashyap finished with two for 16, while Titas Sadhu started the collapse with the first ball of the day.

The pursuit from India was equally tenacious.
Shafali Verma, the captain, admitted in her post-match interview that the team set a target of eight overs to win and they met it.
She led the charge with a six and a four in her 10-ball 15, while the in-form Shweta Sehrawat was caught off guard for 13 just as she was getting into her stride.
Dewmi Wijerathne took three wickets, including Richa Ghosh, who hit her first ball to the fence and was caught off the next.

Sri Lanka had no answer for the free-scoring Soumya Tiwari, who hit five boundaries on her way to 28 not out from 15 deliveries.
She jumped on anything loose as India significantly improved their net run rate, reaching their target in 7.2 overs.

India now awaits the outcome of their Super Six group with bated breath.
They have six points, while Australia and Bangladesh each have four.
Both teams still have one more match to play, both against the UAE, and net run-rate will be a deciding factor if they both win.
