It was absurd to anticipate that the next player, an unknown batter, would fetch more than 10 times the modern-day legend when Kane Williamson was sold for his base price of Rs 2 crore in the recently finished IPL mini-auction in Kochi, Kerala.

But Harry Brook shocked everyone.
For a 23-year-old who has no prior IPL experience and is only a batter with no other abilities, Rs 13.25 crore was paid.
Pure batsmanship only.

So, just who is Harry Brook?

Brook is a daring cricket ball hitter who was born and raised in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.
He has a natural ability to make big shots and excellent hand-eye coordination.
The talented batter served as captain of the seventh-placed England U-19 squad in the 2018 World Cup.

After scoring a century in one of the memorable games at Chelmsford, Brook progressed up the ranks in Yorkshire.
Yorkshire, who included Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Garry Balance in their lineup, were all out for 50 in their first innings before being led by then-19-year-old Brook, who smashed a brilliant 124 in the second innings.
The North English team eventually defeated the defending County champions Essex to win the game.

With 486 runs scored in 13 matches at an astounding average of 69.42 and a strike rate of 149, Brook had an outstanding T20 Blast season in 2021.
He received the much-needed notice during this season, and he moved toward the foreign leagues.

Brook played for Hobart Hurricanes in seven Big Bash Competition (Australia’s domestic T20 league) games in 2021–22, although he wasn’t very successful.
But the Pakistan Super League 2022 gave him the boost he sorely needed.
In 8 innings, he managed 264 runs at an average of 52.80.
He also recorded his first and only T20 hundred during this league.

Brook got off to a great start in The Hundred, England’s local 100-ball competition, scoring an amazing 62.
Ben Stokes, the current Test captain of England and the former captain of Brook’s squad in The Hundred, the Northern Superchargers, praised him as a result.

The national call-up of Brook

Brook was called up for national honours as England toured the West Indies in early 2022 after successful seasons in The Hundred and T20 Blast in 2021.
Only one game could he participate in on that tour.
Brook then participated in all three of England’s T20 matches during India’s trip of the country.
He also had the opportunity to play red ball cricket for England, making his debut in a September 2022 series against South Africa.

Recognition on a global scale

However, it wasn’t until England’s tour of Pakistan that Harry Brook firmly cemented his spot in the team.
Except for the sixth game, he had significant runs in each of the other (7) contests.
However, he was unable to maintain his form during the T20 World Cup.

He once more received assistance from Pakistan.
It was the longest format this time.
As England completely swept the hosts to win a historic 3-0 series, Brook struck centuries in Rawalpindi, Multan, and Karachi just before the IPL Auction.

Why did SRH pay Brook so much?

Due to the timing of the auctions, Brook benefited from the Tests against Pakistan.
The Yorkshireman was a clear favourite for Indian conditions because of his strong spin play.
In addition, his PSL performances suggested that he may make the perfect opener or number three for Sunrisers.

The team required a top-order batsman who could also be developed for future leadership positions after David Warner and Kane Williamson left Hyderabad on poor terms.
Given that Brook led the U.S. U-19 national team, he is the ideal candidate to satisfy all Orange Brigade requirements, which explains the high price for him.
