Tomorrow, Tomorrow, the ‘shell-shaped’ new terminal structure at Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair, will be virtually inaugurate by PM Narendra Modi. At 9 a.m., Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will appear at the airport to participate in the opening ceremony. According to a government release, Modi is expected to inaugurate the terminal building approximately one and a half hours later.
Here are five important details about the new terminal at Veer Savarkar International Airport:
1.Size and passenger capacity: With a total built-up area of 40,837 square metres, the new terminal building is designed to efficiently accommodate 1,200 passengers during peak hours and approximately 40 lakh passengers annually.
2. Iconic shell-shaped design: The terminal building’s architecture features a shell-shaped design that reflects the unique geography and natural splendour of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
3. Emphasis on sustainability: The new terminal incorporates a number of sustainable features, such as a double-insulated roofing system to reduce heat gain, strategically placed skylights that allow ample natural light to reduce reliance on artificial lighting, LED lighting for energy efficiency, and low heat gain glazing.
4.The terminal’s inventive design ensures that it is illuminated exclusively by natural light for 12 hours per day. This will be made possible by the addition of apertures along the roof, which will maximise the use of natural light.
