National Commission for Women Chairperson Rekha Sharma has said she had reached out thrice in the last three months to authorities in Manipur over incidents of violence against women but no response was received from them.

After the May 4 video, which showed two women from one of the warring factions being paraded naked by a group of men from the opposing side, appeared on Wednesday, tension increased in the hills of Manipur.

Official sources in Imphal said on Thursday night that four persons had been detained in connection with the incident as the 26-second video of the agony of the two tribal women a day after ethnic violence erupted in the northeastern state on May 3 stirred a national outcry.

Only on Wednesday did the horrifying video surface, and as the internet ban was lifted, it quickly went viral.

Since May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held in the hill areas to protest against the Meitei community’s quest for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, more than 160 people have died and several others have been injured as a result of ethnic violence in the state.

The tribal population of Manipur, which includes the Naga and Kuki people, makes about 40% of the total population and is primarily concentrated in the hill regions, whereas Meiteis make up around 53% of the population and reside primarily in the Imphal Valley.
