protesting farmers blocked NH-44 in Kurukshetra’s Shahabad over their demand for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sunflower seed.
Numerous police officers are present at the scene to regulate the situation. It is important to note that the protest caused inconvenience for highway-passing commuters.
The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni) backs farmers who are protesting the government’s decision not to purchase sunflower seed at the MSP. According to media, on Monday it also threatened to intensify the agitation if the government failed to resolve the issue.
The demonstration was announced following a meeting with the Haryana education minister and other officials that yielded no results.
Shantanu Sharma, deputy commissioner of Kurukshetra, stated in an official statement that 144 quintals of sunflower seed were purchased on Monday and that producers will receive an additional 1,000 per quintal, as reported by HT.
This will result in a total payment to producers of 5,800 per quintal, as opposed to the MSP of 4,800 per quintal.
Rakesh Bains, the leader of the BKU, announced on Monday that the union has scheduled a farmers’ meeting for June 6 because, according to him, the government is attempting to divide the farmers by enticing them with the commercial procurement of sunflower seed for 4,800.
However, he stated that farmers have the right to sell their produce, so the decision will be made at the meeting on Tuesday.
HT reported that the government’s refusal to offer MSP came as a shock to thousands of sunflower farmers in northern Haryana ahead of the harvest season.
