Ajit Pawar to NCP: ‘Assign me party role, don’t want opposition leader’s post’

“I was never interested to work as Leader of Opposition but accepted the role on demand of the party MLAs,” he said.

After the MVA administration, in which he served as deputy chief minister, fell in July 2017 owing to a revolt in the Shiv Sena, Pawar assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition.
On Wednesday, senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar pleaded with the party’s leadership to release him from his post as Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly and give him another position within the party’s organization.

At the Nationalist Congress Party’s 24th Foundation Day celebration in Mumbai, where his uncle Sharad Pawar and other top party officials were in attendance, he proposed this idea.
I am informed that I don’t act harsh as the head of the opposition,” he continued, opening the door to further speculation.

“I was never interested to work as Leader of Opposition but accepted the role on demand of the party MLAs,” he admitted.

Pawar added that the decision on his request rests with the NCP’s leadership.

“Assign me any post in the party organization, and I will do complete justice to whatever responsibility is entrusted to me,” he continued.

After the MVA administration broke in July 2017 owing to a revolt in Shiv Sena, in which Pawar served as deputy chief minister, he assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition.

Notably, NCP head Sharad Pawar recently appointed his daughter and MP Supriya Sule to the position of working president of the party in Maharashtra. Another president who is actively working for other states is Praful Patel.

Telangana’s chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) are two political forces that, according to Ajit Pawar, must be taken seriously.

The Congress-NCP partnership was damaged in 2019 due only to VBA. We need to prevent the vote from being split among parties with similar goals. “We can’t just brush off BRS and VBA,” he said.

Rao, also known as KCR, is actively working to grow the BRS’s support base in Maharashtra and has recently held demonstrations in the Marathwada region to advocate for the election of a “kisan” (farmers’) government. The BRS has also begun recruiting new members in the western state.

The need to fortify the NCP in Mumbai and Vidarbha was another point that Ajit Pawar made.

Spending on Yoga Day activities amounts to crores, he said.

I inquired as to the whereabouts of Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal of the (Maharashtra) Assembly on Yoga Day. Hearing this, the audience erupted into laughter. “Zirwal told me he can’t bend because of his big stomach and people might laugh at him,” he remarked.

Newly appointed working president Supriya Sule emphasized the importance of establishing booth committees in her address to NCP leaders and office-bearers.

She also mentioned having senior MLAs who were also ministers train candidates in five or six constituencies.

Leaders should travel across the state. The Baramati representative stressed the need for transparency on party positions on key issues.

Sule also mentioned the Uniform Civil Code, adding that a conversation cannot be had or an opinion formed until a draft is completed.

She claimed that once Article 370 was revoked, tourism in Kashmir grew.

However, there is a lack of information regarding the total amount of money brought into the UT or the number of people from outside of Kashmir who have purchased property there. For what reason is Parliament still approving the budget for Kashmir? Inquired she.

Sule campaigned for a quota system to protect minority groups including the Muslim, Dhangar, Lingayat, and Marathas.

Jayant Patil, president of the state’s NCP, argued that the recent pattern of communal violence in Maharashtra may be traced back to places where the BJP is less powerful.

He claimed these occurrences were planned in order to sow discord and splinter the electorate.

Ajit Pawar and Zirwal, he said, should have been at the Yoga Day celebration at Vidhan Bhavan.

“I’ve seen pictures of people who are larger than you doing Yoga. At the very least, he said, you could have gone to watch the leaders of the ruling alliance do some yoga poses.

NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal claimed, “Had there been able leadership in 2014, the Congress-NCP would have still been in power,” a veiled jab at senior Congress leader and former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. They had traveled all the way from Delhi to bring down the UPA government.
