Yemen: At least 85 killed, 100 injured in stampede

The Houthi-run health authority reported that at least 85 people were killed over 322 others were injured when a stampede broke out during a charity distribution event in Sanaa capital of yemen on Thursday.

The Houthi-run health authority reported that at least 85 people were killed over 322 others were injured when a stampede broke out during a charity distribution event in Sanaa capital of yemen on Thursday.

A Houthi security official reported that the pandemonium in the Bab al-Yemen district of Sana’a resulted in at least 85 killed and over 322 injuries.

The most recent tragedy to strike the poorest nation on the Arabian Peninsula occurred days before the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which signals the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Abc.net.au reported that hundreds of individuals crowded into a school to receive donations totaling 5,000 Yemeni riyals (USD 13).

The deceased and injured have been transported to nearby hospitals, and those responsible for the distribution have been apprehended, according to a statement released by the rebel Saba news agency on behalf of the interior ministry.

The Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported that the group’s interior ministry claimed the catastrophe was caused by a stampede during the random distribution of cash by local merchants, without the ministry’s involvement or organization.

Abdul Khaliq Al-Ajri, a ministry spokesman, was quoted on television as saying that two merchants responsible for the uncoordinated distribution of money have been arrested and the incident is being investigated.

Videos that circulated on social media platforms depicted bodies lying on the ground in a large complex, surrounded by people.

As Eid al-Fitr, one of the most important Muslim holidays, approaches, a large number of impoverished Yemenis seeking fundamental necessities flocked to the charity center.

Since late 2014, when the Iran-backed Houthi militia seized control of several northern provinces and drove the Saudi-backed Yemeni government out of the capital Sanaa, Yemen has been embroiled in a civil conflict.
