Supreme court The names of five justices for the Supreme Court have been approved by the Center following a two-month tussle between the Union government and the court over the nomination of new judges. On Saturday, an official notification about the matter was made public. The appointments will take place “very soon,” the Centre promised a top court bench that voiced strong unhappiness over the delay.
In a ceremony to be held at the court’s auditorium in its new building complex on Monday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud is expected to swear in the new judges as members of the apex court. With their appointments, the Supreme Court will be down to 32 judges instead of the 34 that were authorised.
Here are the five judges elevated to the Supreme Court:
Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice, Rajasthan high court
Following his graduation from Allahabad University in 1982, Justice Pankaj Mittal attended Meerut College to earn his law degree. President Droupadi Murmu named Justice Mithal as the chief justice of the Rajasthan High Court in October. He had previously held the positions of chief justice of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. He previously held the position of judge for the Allahabad High Court.
He received his degree in business from Allahabad University and began working in the Allahabad HC in 1985. Between 1990 and February 2006, he served as the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University in Agra’s standing counsel
In July 7, 2006, he was promoted to the position of additional judge on the Allahabad High Court, and on July 2, 2008, he was sworn in as a permanent judge.
Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice, Patna high court
Justice Sanjay Karol, the second-most senior judge, was born in Shimla and earned a law degree from Himachal Pradesh University. He will take the oath of office on Monday. He was Chief Justice of the Patna High Court when he was elevated to the top court. He was born in 1961, attended the prestigious St. Edward School in Shimla, and is an alumnus of the school.
Karol previously held the position as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Additionally, he served as the Himachal Pradesh High Court’s acting chief justice and as a judge. On November 11, 2019, he was named the Patna High Court’s chief justice by the late President Ram Nath Kovind. He is knowledgeable on constitutional, tax, business, criminal, and civil disputes
PV Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice, Manipur high court
On February 14, 2021, Justice PV Sanjay Kumar took over as the Manipur High Court’s top justice. After completing his undergraduate studies in commerce at Hyderabad’s Nizam College and completing his early schooling, Kumar went on to earn his law degree from Delhi University in 1988 and join the Bar Council the same year. Between 2000 and 2003, he represented the government in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and in 2008, he was promoted to additional judge of the Telangana High Court. He previously held the position of High Court Judge for Punjab and Haryana.
Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Judge, Patna high court
Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah graduated from Patna Law College and comes from a distinguished Bihari family. He has largely worked in the Patna High Court, however he has also appeared before the Supreme Court and the high courts in Delhi, Calcutta, and Jharkhand. In October 2021, Justice Amanullah was temporarily assigned to the Andhra Pradesh high court before being reassigned to the Patna high court in June of the following year.

Manoj Misra, Judge, Allahabad high court
In 1988, Justice Manoj Misra graduated from the University of Allahabad with a law degree. Since then, he has worked as a lawyer in civil, tax, criminal, and constitutional cases. On November 21, 2011, he was appointed by the previous president, Pratibha Patil, to the position of additional judge on the Allahabad High Court. On August 6, 2013, he was given permanent status. Since that time, he has worked as a judge for the Allahabad High Court.
