Monday, India lodged a forceful protest with a senior US diplomat over vandalism at the Indian consulate general in San Francisco during a demonstration by Khalistan supporters, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

“In a meeting with the US Charge d’ Affaires in New Delhi, India strongly protested the vandalism of property at the Consulate General of India in San Francisco,” the ministry of external affairs said in a statement.

“The United States government was reminded of its fundamental obligation to safeguard diplomatic representation. It was instructed to take the necessary steps to prevent a recurrence,” the statement continued.

According to PTI, pro-Khalistan elements breached the makeshift entrance barriers erected by the city police and installed two “Khalistani” flags within the consulate premises in San Francisco. The consular personnel promptly removed these flags. A group of enraged demonstrators stormed the consulate, hurling iron rods at the door and windows.

The attack on the Indian consulate in San Francisco occurred just hours after pro-Khalistani supporters tore down the Indian flag floating atop the Indian high commission in London, as Punjab Police began a crackdown against the radical preacher Amritpal Singh.
