EAM Jaishankar’s 4 nation visit of Central and Latin America begins today

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the EAM will make official visits to Guyana (April 21-23), Panama (April 24-25), Colombia (April 25-27), and the Dominican Republic (April 27-29).

From April 21-23, the EAM will visit the Caribbean nation of Guyana, where he will meet with government officials and interact with several ministers.

Together with his counterpart, Hugh Hilton Todd, he will co-chair the Joint Commission Meeting, at which all issues between the two countries will be discussed. According to the MEA’s official press release, the EAM’s visit to Guyana would also provide an opportunity for a meeting of Foreign Ministers in the India-COFCOR (Council on Foreign and Community Relations; a group of 15 members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)) format and bilateral meetings with participating Ministers.

Following his trip to Guyana, Jaishankar will spend April 24-25 in Panama. Foreign Minister Janaina Tewaney Mencomo will host him during his visit to the country’s senior leadership. During this visit, the India-SICA Foreign Ministerial Meeting will be held, where he will meet with representatives of the Central American Integration System (SICA), which comprises eight nations.

On April 25-27, the EAM will travel to Colombia, where he will confer with a number of government, business, and civil society leaders. The External Affairs Ministry stated in a press release that his trip to Colombia would be the country’s first foreign ministerial visit.

In addition, Jaishankar’s visit to the Dominican Republic is India’s highest-level visit since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1999. The dates of his trip are April 27-29.

After the establishment of our resident embassy in Santo Domingo in 2022, the EAM will visit the country. In addition to contacting the country’s political leadership, EAM will meet with Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez, according to a press release.

In addition, the two leaders would formally open the Indian resident mission. EAM is also anticipated to deliver a speech at the Foreign Ministry of the Dominican Republic.

A corporate delegation from India, led by CII, will join EAM at business-related events scheduled during the visit. These meetings demonstrate the increasing desire on both parties to strengthen trade ties. EAM will also meet with Indian community members in all four countries.

The momentum of India-LAC engagements is bolstered by the EAM’s visit to these four countries, as well as his bilateral engagements and interactions with counterparts of important regional bodies CARICOM and SICA.
