This weekend’s G20 Summit in the nation’s capital is a highly anticipated event that will feature prominent world leaders such as President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Pragati Maidan in New Delhi’s International Exhibition-and-Convention Centre (IECC) complex, also known as Bharat Mandapam, will host the summit. On July 26, this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this complex. It features cutting-edge facilities, such as a convention center, exhibition halls, and an amphitheater.

During the G20 Summit, Bharat Mandapam, also known as the “culture corridor,” will display the diverse traditions of 29 nations, including India and the G20’s special invitees. This display will include both physical and virtual exhibitions, providing visitors with an immersive experience.

Tuesday saw the installation of a 27-foot-tall bronze statue of Nataraja, made of Ashtadhatu and weighing approximately 18 tons. Renowned sculptor Radhakrishnan Sthapaty from Swami Malai in Tamil Nadu and his team completed this sculpture in a record seven months. PM Modi posted images of the statue on X (previously Twitter), stating, “The majestic Nataraja statue at Bharat Mandapam brings to life aspects of our rich history and culture. As the world assembles for the G20 summit, it will serve as a monument to India’s age-old artistry and traditions.”

Bharat Mandapam has been developed as India’s largest MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination, with a campus area of approximately 123 acres. In terms of available covered event space, this complex rates among the top exhibition and convention centers worldwide.

According to a government statement, the Bharat Mandapam was inspired by “Lord Basaveshwara’s concept of Anubhav Mandapam,” which was initially a stage for public ceremonies. This expansive complex will be accessible to the public and will offer comprehensive facilities in support of the nation’s aspiration to progress into a modern and developed society.

The Bharat Mandapam building’s architectural design is inspired by “India’s rich traditions,” symbolizing the nation’s pride in its heritage while embracing modern amenities and contemporary living.

The refined form of the Shankha, or conch shell, inspired the building’s design. Numerous facets of India’s traditional art and culture are intricately depicted on various walls and facades of the Convention Centre. These include ‘Surya Shakti,’ which represents India’s dedication to harnessing solar energy, ‘Zero to ISRO,’ which celebrates the nation’s achievements in space exploration, and ‘Pancha Mahabhuta,’ which represents the fundamental elements of the universe, including Aakash (Sky), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water), Prithvi (Earth), and others. In addition, the Convention Centre is adorned with an assortment of paintings and tribal art from various regions of the country.
