Madhya Pradesh army veteran who was seriously injured in an accident.
PUNE An army veteran from Madhya Pradesh who was seriously hurt in an accident donated his organs to a number of recipients, among them the Pune-based widow of a soldier in the service. The Army Organ Retrieval and Transplant Authority (AORTA) organised an inter-hospital transfer of a heart for transplant on February 11 in a first for Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS).
The 40-year-old veteran who donated his organs was struck by a two-wheeler on February 8 in Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, and was a victim of a road accident.
On February 9, he was transported to Army Hospital, Research & Referral (AHRR), New Delhi, after being put on life support at a nearby civil hospital. On February 11, the critical care team of AHRR declared him brain dead due to a severe head injury.
The veteran’s family willingly agreed to make numerous organ donations, according to the AORTA transplant coordinator.
A weak-hearted 29-year-old soldier’s wife was waiting for a suitable heart organ donor for the past six months, according to a news statement from the Army Institute of Cardio Thoracic Sciences.
She had dilated cardiomyopathy and recurrent ventricular tachycardia, according to Commandant AICTS. “She had an implanted gadget that continually shocked her heart automatically to maintain its beat. She needed a new heart to extend her life, and the AICTS team was looking for one that would work for her “said in the release.
With the aid of Western Air Command, the medical division of Southern Command organised the transport of a donated heart from AHRR.

AICTS, Pune was established by Southern Command Provost unit in coordination with Maharashtra state police and traffic police. The organ was retrieved by the heart surgery team at AHRR, transported through a green corridor to waiting Indian Air force aircraft at New Delhi specially dedicated to this effort, flown to Pune, and then transported by a green corridor to AICTS, Pune in little more than four hours.
The heart transplant was completed quickly by the director of cardiothoracic surgery at AICTS and his crew of surgeons and anesthesiologists.
Due to a miracle effort by the IAF in providing a quick Embraer jet aircraft, this is the first time a donor’s heart has been delivered between two service hospitals in such a short amount of time.
