According to the Israel Defense Force, Israel has targeted two tunnels, one of which is located in Beit Hanoun, a city in northern Gaza, and the other near Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza.
The strikes were a response to “security violations” committed by Hamas in recent days, the IDF said, referring to rocket fire from the Gaza Strip and a massive rocket barrage from Lebanon on Thursday.
According to the military, the two tunnels did not cross into Israeli territory and posed no threat to Israeli civilians.
In addition, two facilities allegedly utilized by Hamas to manufacture weapons were targeted.
“The IDF holds Hamas accountable for all terror activities emanating from the Gaza Strip, and it will face the consequences for security violations against Israel,” the IDF stated.
According to media of Israel, citing the IDF, 34 missiles were fired from southern Lebanon at Western and Upper Galilee prior to this attack.
According to the IDF, 25 of the projectiles were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system.
The IDF adds that at least five missiles struck Israeli territory while the locations of the remaining four remain unknown.
The impact of the projectile resulted in two minor injuries and some damage.
The IDF’s Home Front Command says there are no special instructions for civilians following the unprecedented attack.
The Prime Minister’s Office says in a statement reported by media of Israel that, following the attack, a high-level security cabinet was convened in Israel, where a succession of decisions were made based on the recommendations of military and defense officials.
Netanyahu stated in his statement, “Israel’s response tonight and in the future will exact a high price from our enemies.”
