In response to the communal clashes that erupted in Nuh, Haryana, and spread to Gurugram and the adjacent area, the United States has calls for calm.

During a Wednesday briefing at the US State Department, spokesperson Matthew Miller urged parties to refrain from violence. He stated, however, that there is no information regarding any Americans affected by the unrest.

Regarding the conflicts, we would, as usual, urge parties to maintain calm and refrain from engaging in violent conduct. Regarding whether we have received communications from any Americans, I am unaware. Miller stated, “I’m happy to follow up with the Embassy.”

Due to critical and tense conditions, the Haryana state government has announced that mobile internet services will remain suspended in Nuh, Faridabad, Palwal, and three subdivisions of Gurugram until August 5. The decision seeks to prevent the spread of false information and rumours via social media.

Following the violence, security has been increased in neighbouring districts, including Faridabad, Palwal, and Gurugram. Schools and colleges in the area have been closed out of precaution.

HARYANA’S COMMUNAL CONFLICTS

In Nuh, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal organised a religious procession that triggered rioting in Haryana. The march was met with gunfire and heavy stone-throwing, forcing a gathering of about 2,500 people to seek refuge in a temple.

In close proximity to Delhi, Palwal, Faridabad, and Gurugram also reported incidents of violence and arson in response to the incident.

Monday night, a mosque in Gurugram was incinerated and its imam was murdered. During the past few days, multiple stores and businesses have been assaulted.

Manohar Lal Khattar, chief minister of Haryana, stated on Wednesday that 116 individuals have been arrested and 90 have been detained thus far. The perpetrators of the violence will not be spared, he stated.

An investigation by India Today’s Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) uncovered that a disturbing sequence of unfettered aggression propagated through social media led to the outbreak of chaos in the Nuh district of Haryana on Monday. Just days before the outbreak of violence, a series of posts containing thinly veiled threats and incitements to violence appeared on multiple online platforms.

North Korea tests two missiles into the waters off its east coast in retaliation for the US deploy a nuclear armed submarine in a South Korean port for the first time in nearly four decades.

North Korea discharged two short-range ballistic missiles from a site near Pyongyang’s international airport between 3:30 and 3:46 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Yonhap News Agency, citing South Korean military officials. The missiles travelled approximately 550 kilometres (340 miles), as reported by Yonhap.

The launch escalated tensions on the peninsula after the USS Kentucky, a ballistic missile submarine of the Ohio-class, arrived in the South Korean port of Busan on Tuesday and North Korea detained an American soldier who crossed the border from the south side of a joint truce village in the Joint Security Area.

The deployment of the submarines was timed to coincide with the first meeting of a new US-South Korea body that seeks to prevent North Korea from deploying its nuclear arsenal.

The Nuclear Consultative Group developed out of a summit between President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol in April in Washington. Yoon Suk Yeol has sought to bring South Korea closer to the United States, including in defence matters.

The group aims to give South Korea a greater say in how the United States deploys its nuclear umbrella and provide assurances that it will be used to respond to a North Korean attack.

There is no ‘Immediate Threat’

The US Indo-Pacific Command stated that it was aware of North Korea’s missile launches and was coordinating with allies and partners. “While we have assessed that these events do not pose an immediate threat to US personnel or territory, or to our allies, the missile launches highlight the destabilising impact of the DPRK’s illicit weapons programme,” the command said in a statement, referring to North Korea by its abbreviated name.

North Korea has objected to the United States’ deployment of nuclear assets in the region and demanded an end to all submarine deployments. In addition, it has called the Nuclear Consultative Group a “nuclear war tool.”

Also read this:North Korea Fired ‘Suspected Ballistic Missile’, Says South

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said in a statement released Monday by state media, “The US should be aware that its enhanced extended deterrence system and excessively extended military alliance system, a threatening entity, will only push the DPRK further away from the negotiating table.”

The Indian Ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, arrived at the Indian embassy on Saturday to inspects the premises and annexe, as well as assess the security arrangements, in response to threats from pro-Khalistani groups to hold protests outside Indian missions across the United States.

According to officials, there has been no disorder or disturbance outside the Indian consulate, nor are there any indications of protests.

Meanwhile, visuals outside the Indian Consulate in San Francisco showed barricades and police personnel deployed to prevent any untoward incidents in response to pro-Khalistani elements’ Saturday appeals for protests outside Indian missions.

On July 2 in San Francisco, there were arson attempts and violent rhetoric directed at Indian diplomats, including Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

In the meantime, security was increased in front of the Indian embassy in Washington, DC, in anticipation of demonstrations by Khalistan supporters. Metropolitan police and private security personnel were observed assuming positions in front of the Indian embassy.

The police enforcement agency has not issued any permits for demonstrations in front of the embassy.

Since the morning, police vehicles and officials have been seen stationed at the scene, and the entire area has been cordoned off.

“We are prepared to face and address the circumstance. Everything is quiet thus far. We have not seen or heard anything as of yet,” a representative told media.

Additionally, police have been deployed in front of Ambassador Sandhu’s residence, India House.

The execution of Khalistan Tiger Force leader and designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada precipitated these demonstrations. He was sought on terrorism charges in India.

After his demise, demonstrations were held in cities such as Melbourne, San Francisco, and Toronto, among others.

This was followed by posters containing threats against the Indian ambassadors to Canada and the United States, as well as the Toronto consulate general.

The posters also announced Saturday rallies in front of Indian missions in the United Kingdom, San Francisco, and Canada.

The United Kingdom witnessed a considerably subdued demonstration outside the Indian High Commission in London on Saturday, with only 30 to 40 pro-Khalistanis present between 12:30 and 2:30 GMT. The area’s security was increased after the UK police dispatched additional forces to the scene.

However, at the time this report was filed, the protesters had already departed the site.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated that New Delhi has raised the issue of threats to Indian diplomats in London amid a rise in anti-Indian violence outside diplomatic premises, but that it will judge the UK authorities based on what actually transpires on the ground.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated at a press briefing on Thursday, “This violence against our diplomats and within our diplomatic facilities abroad is unacceptable, and we condemn it in the strongest terms.”

He added, “If there are threats or attacks against our diplomats, as depicted on those posters, we take them very seriously and expect those authorities to take action.”

The White House announced on Friday that Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) will be discussed at the alliance’s upcoming summit, but it won’t come out as a member.

Jake Sullivan, White House National Security Advisor, stated that next week’s summit in Vilnius will highlight NATO’s willingness to contemplate Ukraine’s membership, a “milestone” in and of itself, according to Sullivan.

Sullivan stated, “The NATO Summit will delve into the question of NATO’s relationship with Ukraine, including both the question of Ukraine’s path towards future membership and the question of a multi-year-old ongoing partnership.”

“The path to NATO membership for Ukraine will be discussed at the summit, but Kyiv still needs to take additional steps before membership, and Ukraine will not join NATO as a result of this summit,” he added.

Sullivan noted that Ukraine would have the opportunity to discuss the necessary reforms for Kyiv to meet NATO standards.

While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is prepared to attend the summit to establish that his nation should join the alliance when its conflict with Russia ends, Sullivan stated that the White House anticipates Sweden’s NATO membership to be approved in the near future.

Additionally, he stated that Turkey and Hungary may “possibly” abandon their opposition at the upcoming summit.

“If not, we believe it will happen in the not-too-distant future,” Sullivan said, adding that there was “fundamental goodwill” toward Sweden’s move within the alliance.

Last year, Sweden and Finland ended decades of military neutrality and submitted applications to join NATO in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In April, Finland became an official member of the alliance, but Turkey and Hungary prevented Sweden from joining due to the need for unanimity in support of new members.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preventing Sweden from joining the European Union due to a long-standing disagreement over Stockholm’s decision to allow alleged Kurdish militants to reside in the Nordic country.

Montana became the first state in the US to ban TikTok on Wednesday, with the law scheduled to go into effect in 2019 as debate over the app’s impact and security intensifies.

The ban signed into law by Governor Greg Gianforte will serve as a legal test for a nationwide ban on the Chinese-owned platform, which Washington legislators are increasingly demanding.

“TikTok may not operate within the territorial jurisdiction of Montana,” according to a copy of the new law posted on the state’s website.

A violation of the restriction occurs whenever “a user accesses TikTok, is offered access to TikTok, or is offered the ability to download TikTok.”

Every day that a violation occurs, a $10,000 sanction is imposed.

According to the law, Apple and Google must remove TikTok from their app stores or face possible daily penalties.

The action will almost undoubtedly be challenged in court.

State political leaders have “trampled on the free speech of hundreds of thousands of Montanans who use the app to express themselves, gather information, and run their small businesses in the name of anti-Chinese sentiment,” according to Keegan Medrano, the ACLU Montana policy director.

The law stated that the prohibition will go into effect in 2024, but will be nullified if TikTok is acquired by a company incorporated in a country not designated as a foreign adversary by the United States.

“By unlawfully banning TikTok, Governor Gianforte has violated the First Amendment rights of the people of Montana,” a spokesperson for the company told AFP.

Also read this:Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will be ‘significant’ topic of conversation: US Security Advisor on Biden’s Hiroshima visit for G7

“We want to reassure Montanans that they can continue to use TikTok to express themselves, earn a living, and find community as we continue to defend the rights of our users in Montana and beyond.”

TikTok has stated publicly that the constitutionality of the suspension will ultimately be determined by the courts.

The law is the most recent skirmish between TikTok and numerous western governments, with the app already banned on government devices in the United States, Canada, and a number of European nations.

The app is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, which vehemently contradicts allegations made by a large number of US politicians that it is under the control of the Chinese government and used for espionage.

Gianforte himself stated on Twitter that he signed the prohibition to “protect Montanans’ personal and private data from the Chinese Communist Party.”

Despite its immense popularity, the White House has issued TikTok an ultimatum: either separate from its Chinese proprietors or cease operations in the United States.

Montana’s crackdown on TikTok comes as the app confronts national legislative proposals, including one that would grant the White House expansive new authority over Chinese technology companies.

On Monday, the White House refused to corroborate a media report claiming that the United States provided vital intelligence to the Indian military that assisted it in successfully combating Chinese “incursions” last year. John Kirby, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications at the White House, told reporters at a daily news conference, in response to a question about the news report, “No, I cannot confirm that.”

The media reported in an exclusive article that India was able to repel a Chinese military incursion in border territory in the high Himalayas late last year due to unprecedented intelligence-sharing with the US military, an act that surprised China’s People’s Liberation Army, enraged Beijing, and appears to have forced the Chinese Communist Party to reconsider its approach to land grabs along its borders.

A source familiar with a previously unreported U.S. intelligence review of the encounter in the Arunachal Pradesh region stated, “For the first time, the U.S. government provided its Indian counterparts with real-time information regarding Chinese positions and force strength prior to a PLA incursion.”

“The information included actionable satellite imagery and was more detailed and delivered faster than anything the U.S. had previously shared with the Indian military,” the report stated.

“They were holding out. The United States had provided India with everything it needed to be completely prepared for this. It exemplifies the effectiveness of how the two militaries are now cooperating and sharing intelligence, according to an unnamed source quoted by a newspaper.

regional bank stocks plummeted on Monday as investors reassessed the value of such institutions following the collapse of Signature Bank and Silicon Valley Bank of united states.

It was reported that trading in approximately a dozen banks was halted due to the volatile market conditions, which triggered so-called circuit breakers designed to prevent runaway crashes.

The Arizona-based Western Alliance was the worst performer of the day, falling 80% in early trading. The New York Times reported that First Republic Bank fell 75%, Utah-based Zions Bancorp fell approximately 20%, Comerica fell approximately 30%, East West Bancorp fell 30%, and Regions Financial, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, was down approximately 10%.

Shares of larger banks were affected less severely, but were not immune. Citigroup and Wells Fargo declined by over 4%, Bank of America by over 3%, and JPMorgan Chase by approximately 1%. The New York Times reported that the KBW bank index, which tracks the performance of 24 major banks, fell 10%, adding to sharp losses last week that wiped out nearly USD 200 billion from the aggregate value of the banks in the index.

The leading American newspaper reported that the broader S&P 500 stock index shrugged off the worst of the pain in the banking sector, which is one of the index’s smaller sectors and thus has less impact on the overall market. By late morning, the S&P 500 had risen slightly.

The banking sector crisis also prompted a rapid reassessment of the number of times the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates, as concerns about the resilience of the economy are expected to restrain the central bank, according to the publication.

This caused the US government debt markets to experience their greatest fluctuations since 1987’s Black Monday, one of the most severe market crashes on record. According to the New York Times, the two-year Treasury yield, which is sensitive to changes in interest rate expectations, fell 0.54 percentage points during morning trading to just above 4%, its largest one-day decline since October 1987.

This may not seem like much, but the yield typically fluctuates by tiny fractions of a percentage point each day and only surpassed 5% for the first time since mid-2007 last week. The movement on Monday was reminiscent of the largest movements surrounding the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the dot-com bust of the early 2000s.

According to the New York Times, after increasing their wagers that the Fed will raise interest rates by up to a full percentage point in the coming months, investors are now sceptical that the Fed will be so aggressive.

The Fed has used higher interest rates to slow the economy and reduce inflation, which is also the source of the banking industry’s pain. According to Goldman Sachs, the Fed will not raise interest rates at its meeting next week.

Hari Kumar expresses concern over the escalating geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific amidst US-China rivalry.

From 5.5% last week to 4.7% on Monday, investors’ expectations for the Fed’s June interest rate decision have decreased. In tandem with the decline in interest rates, the dollar fell 0.9% against a basket of the major trading partners of the United States.

US’ Resolve Tibet Act has intensified tiff between China

The Tibet Press said that the China-Tibet dispute has escalated once more as a result of a bill that US lawmakers have introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate to enhance American policy for the peaceful resolution of their disagreements on Tibet. The Resolve Tibet Act, also known as the Bill, will reportedly make it official US policy that China must reopen communication with the Dalai Lama’s representatives as long as the conflict between Tibet and China is still ongoing and Tibet’s legal status has not yet been established in accordance with international law, according to Tibet Press.

The timing of the legislation is crucial because Penpa Tsering’s visit to the US was when it was introduced. The President of the Central Tibetan Administration is Tsering. He is in Washington to meet with US representatives, including the bill’s primary sponsors and members of the Biden administration.

Beijing has previously accused the Dalai Lama of engaging in “separatist” activities and attempting to partition Tibet. But according to the “Middle-Way approach,” the spiritual head of Tibet has stressed that he is not aiming for independence but rather “real autonomy for all Tibetans residing in the three ancient regions of Tibet.”

According to Tibet Press, the Resolve Tibet Act offers fresh hope for a peaceful resolution to the country’s protracted problem in Tibet.

The oppression of Tibetans under the totalitarian rule of China continues, and the area is increasingly under constant observation.

According to Tibet Press, Tibetans are subjected to harsher punishments and closer surveillance than inhabitants of other nations because of the political sensitivity of the area.

According to several media reports, the Tibetan people are still being persecuted, harassed, abused, and tormented on their own soil.

A 30-year-old Tibetan elementary school teacher by the name of Palgon was reportedly detained at his home in August 2022 and has been missing ever since, according to Radio Free Asia.

Palgon is a native of the Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in China’s southeast’s Qinghai province. He had previously worked as an elementary school teacher in the Pema county of the prefecture, but he left that job to pursue writing on his own. Over the past few months, China has increasingly cracked down on Tibetan people, including monks, writers, young activists, and others.

According to a Voice of America report, a Tibetan father and his three small children were taken to the Lhasa Beijing Middle School Quarantine Center after the woman’s anti-COVID test was negative.
