HYDERABAD : On Monday, eight men broke into a residence on Hyderabad’s outskirts and three raped a 15-year-old girl, sparking violent rallies by opposition leaders who demanded harsh punishment.
A few weeks ago, the girl and her 14-year-old sibling moved in with her cousin in Meerpet after losing their parents. Monday morning, while they were at home with three other children from the vicinity, eight men armed with knives forced their way inside.
“Three of them carried the girl upstairs, while the others threatened her brother and the other children with knives.” The three men took turns raping her, according to a police officer.
As word of the heinous crime spread, a large number of individuals, including Congress employees led by Meerpet mayor Parijatha Reddy, blocked the main road near the survivor’s home in protest. Later, police reported that Reddy and other party leaders were arrested and transferred to the Amberpet police station. Personnel from the police force have been dispatched to prevent a disintegration of law and order.
Rachakonda police commissioner DS Chauhan also came to the spot.
B Sai Sree, the deputy commissioner of police (DCP) for LB Nagar, stated that seven special police squads have been formed to apprehend the suspects. She stated, “We have registered a case of gangrape against a minor, as well as relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.”
The girl has been sent to the Sakhi centre for a medical exam and to have her statement recorded, the DCP added.
The defendant fled the scene after the girl began to scream for assistance. Her brother immediately notified the neighbours, who then informed the authorities. “We analysed the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to locate the suspect. We have yet to capture them. “We are also investigating whether they had a history of animosity towards the victim’s family,” said the police officer.
The girl’s younger brother, who lodged a formal complaint with the Meerpet police, stated that they lived with their parents in the Lal Bazar neighbourhood of south Hyderabad until they were orphaned and then moved in with their cousin. The boy stated that he worked at a flex board store in Dilsukhnagar, while his sister worked as a salesgirl at a textile shop.
