The three-match ODI series between India and Australia will begin on September 22 at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Both teams will use this series as their concluding preparation for the ODI World Cup in 2023. India was recently crowned Asian champion, while Australia was defeated by South Africa by a score of 2-3. The two teams enter the three-match series in contrasting conditions.
Notably, Australia has dominated India in the last four series, winning three of them (one at home and two on the road). Several players, including their captain Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Glenn Maxwell, have returned to the team for the series.
However, star hitter Travis Head and all-around player Ashton Agar were not selected. Agar has returned home for the birth of his first child, while Head is in a race against the clock to recover from a hand fracture in time for the World Cup.
India’s senior players, including captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Kuldeep Yadav, have been rested for the first two matches. In Rohit’s absence, wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul will manage the team, while veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has returned to the ODI setup after a 21-month absence. Ruturaj Gaikwad has also been included as a reserve opener for the first two matches in Rohit’s absence.
