30 dead after migrant boat breaks apart off Italy’s southern coast

The ship was carrying more than 100 migrants when it ran into trouble at dawn in the Ionian sea.

According to RAI state media, the Italian coast guard has recovered approximately 30 bodies after a boat carrying migrants capsized in rough seas off the southern shore of the Italian mainland on Sunday.

When it ran into trouble early in the morning in the Ionian sea, the ship was transporting more than one hundred migrants, according to RAI, which cited unidentified port authorities near the coastal town of Crotone in Calabria, which is located at the toe of the Italian peninsula.

Approximately forty people were discovered to be alive by the middle of the morning, according to Luca Cari, a spokesperson for the firefighters who were assisting in the search and rescue efforts.

The number of bodies that have been recovered has been put at 27, and according to the Italian news service AGI, one of the victims was a baby that was only a few months old.

According to the radio report, rescue attempts included boats from the coast guard, border police, and fire departments.
