President Joe Biden signs an executive order expanding gun background checks.

US President Joe Biden signed an executive order to increase the number of background checks conducted during gun sales, stating that this is “common sense.”

Joe Biden stated, while briefing reporters on gun violence, “Today I am announcing another executive order.” They will speed up and intensify their efforts to save more lives faster. This executive order aids in keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals. In the interim, my executive order directs my attorney general to take every lawful action possible to move us as close as possible to universal background checks without new legislation, while I continue to urge Congress to require background checks for all firearm sales.

“It’s just common sense to just check whether someone is a felon and a domestic abuser before they buy a gun,” he added.

Biden also stated that he signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant gun safety law in thirty years, into law last year. In addition, he signed more executive orders to reduce gun violence than any of my predecessors had at this point in their administrations.

According to a White House statement, the Executive Order will keep more firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals by expanding the effective use of “red flag” laws, bolstering efforts to hold the gun industry accountable, and accelerating law enforcement efforts to identify and apprehend community-threatened shooters.

In addition, President Biden is encouraging the Federal Trade Commission to publish a report analysing how firearm manufacturers market firearms to minors.

“Last year, President Biden signed into law the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most significant legislation enacted in nearly 30 years to reduce gun violence. In light of the Act’s passage, he urged Congress to capitalise on the bipartisan momentum and advance additional commonsense measures to reduce gun violence. Again and again, he has called for Congress to act, including by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, requiring background checks for all gun sales, requiring safe storage of firearms, closing the dating violence restraining order loophole, and repealing gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability,” the statement read.

President Biden will do everything he can to reduce gun violence and save lives while he continues to urge Congress to act. “This is why, over the past two years, President Biden has taken more executive actions to reduce gun violence than any other president at this point in their administration,” the statement continued.
