The December 2014 establishment of the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations seeks to increase global awareness of the numerous benefits of yoga practice. Following Prime Minister Modi’s proposition nine years ago to establish International Yoga Day as an annual celebration, the 21st of June has been designated as a special day to promote the global significance of this ancient practice.

The Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations extended a cordial invitation to participate in the yoga session conducted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an official advisory for the event.

Where will the function be held?

The session will take place on June 21 from 8 to 9 a.m. on the North Lawn of the United Nations Headquarters, where an India-donated monument of Mahatma Gandhi is installed.

The historic yoga session is anticipated to attract illustrious guests, including high-ranking United Nations officials, ambassadors, envoys, delegates from Member States, and notable members of the global and diaspora communities. Yoga-friendly attire is encouraged, and yoga mats will be provided during the session, with the option for attendees to take them home as a memento of this historic event.

In a Thursday tweet, President Csaba Korosi of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly expressed his eagerness to celebrate the 9th International Day of Yoga alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the UNHQ North Lawn.

International Yoga Day: A voyage of unity and consciousness

In 2015, the world observed the first International Day of Yoga, which has since become an annual tradition. The United Nations recognizes yoga as an ancient practice with physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions that originated in India.

The Sanskrit word ‘yoga’ denotes the union of body and consciousness, emphasizing the interconnectedness of individuals and their environments. Today, yoga has transcended borders, gaining popularity in various forms all over the world and serving as a means to attain balance, self-awareness, and overall health.

Global endorsement and health benefits

A resolution proposed by India and supported by an unprecedented 175 member states made possible the establishment of the International Day of Yoga.

In his address to the 69th session of the General Assembly, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the holistic nature of yoga, highlighting its role in promoting unity and nurturing good health.

In addition, the World Health Organization has emphasized the importance of physical activity in combating noncommunicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes. Yoga’s capacity to reduce physical inactivity and improve well-being aligns precisely with the worldwide demand for healthier lifestyle choices.

Vikas Khanna, a renowned Michelin-starred chef, author, filmmaker, and entrepreneur, conveyed his immense pride in India’s global influence in numerous fields. In a tweet extending a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi, who was about to depart on his first Official State Visit to the United States, Khanna highlighted India’s significant influence in areas such as yoga, cuisine, technology, education, science, the arts, and entertainment.

As an Indian who has lived in the United States for nearly 25 years, Khanna expressed his profound respect for Prime Minister Modi’s visit and emphasized his position as a bridge between the world’s two largest democracies.Khanna eagerly anticipated the visit, intending to exhibit India’s illustrious heritage and accomplishments to the world in all their splendor.

The Ministry of External Affairs has announced that US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host PM Narendra Modi at a state dinner at the White House. On June 22, Modi will address a joint session of the United States Congress during his visit.
