India commemorates Army Day every year on January 15 to honour General (later Field Marshal) K.M. Cariappa, the first Indian Commander in Chief of the Indian Army.
On this day in 1949, Cariappa, who led Indian forces to victory in the 1947 war, succeeded General Sir FRR Bucher, the final British Commander-in-Chief, as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of Independent India. Army Day is observed annually to honour Cariappa and the armed services.
Service Chiefs paid their respects to the Indian Army at the Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi until last year. The Army Day Parade demonstrates the progression of the Indian Army’s numerous weapon systems. On this day, soldiers also get Gallantry awards and Sena medals.

As part of the Army’s outreach initiative to forge stronger ties with civilians, over one thousand people participated in a run on Necklace Road in Hyderabad. A blood donation camp was also organised in which 7,500 units of blood were donated at military hospitals in both Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
The Indian Army’s event theme in 2022 was “In Strike with the Future.” It was viewed as an acknowledgment of the “growing importance of niche and disruptive technology in modern combat.”
