Monterey Park, California:
Asian Americans were in shock Tuesday after two mass shootings in California that targeted members of their community killed 18, with the alleged gunmen in both cases being older Asian men.
The killings occurred within 48 hours of each other, so close together that California Governor Gavin Newsom was at a hospital meeting with victims of the first attack when he was pulled away to be briefed on the second.
“It’s always said: only in America,” a visibly irritated Newsom told reporters Tuesday in Half Moon Bay.

“What the hell is wrong with us that we allow these weapons of war and high-capacity clips to be carried on the streets and sidewalks?”
Another shooting occurred overnight in Washington state, when a gunman killed three people at a convenience store in an apparent random act, according to police.
The carnage prompted President Joe Biden to renew calls for Congress to pass an assault weapons ban as soon as possible.
On Monday, a group of senators reintroduced a federal assault weapons ban as well as legislation raising the minimum purchase age for assault weapons to 21.
In the aftermath of the shootings, Biden said he would send Vice President Kamala Harris to California.
“Our hearts go out to the people of California,” he said, describing the massacres as “devastating.”
Investigators were still looking into the motives behind the two incidents, which stood out among the scourge of mass shootings in America because of the community impacted (gun violence is uncommon among Asians and Asian Americans) and the suspects’ ages, 67 and 72.
According to the nonpartisan Violence Project, 79 percent of mass shooters between 1966 and 2020 were under the age of 45.
According to the report, only 6.4 percent of mass shooters at the time were Asian.
The Monday massacre took place on two farms near Half Moon Bay, a rural coastal community south of San Francisco.
San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus announced Tuesday that five men and two women, both Hispanic and Asian, had been killed, and that 67-year-old Half Moon Bay resident Chunli Zhao had been arrested.
A semi-automatic handgun was discovered.
“The only known link between the victims and the suspect is that they may have worked together,” she explained.
“All of the evidence points to this being a case of workplace violence.”
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a former coworker was granted a restraining order against Zhao due to his violent behaviour.
“Mr. Zhao told me today I’m going to kill you,” Jingjiu Wang wrote in 2013, when the two worked together at a San Jose restaurant.
“He then took a pillow and began to suffocate me by covering my face with it.”
On Tuesday, the small community of Half Moon Bay was still coming to terms with the mass shooting.
As residents gathered to grieve in a local church, a Buddhist monk struck a singing bowl once for each of the seven people killed.
“This is a tragedy, especially on New Year’s Day,” Aily Li, whose family owns the China House restaurant, told AFP.
Sophie Li, who works at Shiki Japanese Cuisine in town, described guns as frightening.
“We just argue without a gun.
But having a gun gives you more power, and something will happen “She stated.
“You’re dealing with people who have guns, and you never know what’s going to happen.
People were shot, correct?”
Vengeful
Meanwhile, in southern California, authorities were trying to piece together what led 72-year-old Huu Can Tran to open fire on a crowd celebrating the Lunar New Year at a suburban dance hall on Saturday night, killing 11.
Sheriff Robert Luna of Los Angeles County reported that 42 shots were fired during the incident in Monterey Park, and that the suspect, Tran, had been arrested for illegal gun possession decades before.

Luna corroborated reports made to police that some of Tran’s victims may have known him.
The whereabouts of Tran were unknown.
The New York Times cited immigration paperwork showing that he was a naturalised US citizen of Vietnamese ancestry, but CNN claimed that his marriage licence indicated that he had immigrated from China.
Tran was once described as a “vengeful loner” by an ex-friend.
“Two words that sum up everything about him: he’s someone to be wary of.
Because of this, he is wary of others around him.

The acquaintance told the Los Angeles Times that “he hated anybody around him, especially if he thought someone was doing ill on him.”
A man remarked, “I suppose his life was so unhappy and desperate that he chose that day to end his life, and in the meantime, he wanted to get everyone he didn’t like or despised to go with him.
