PM Modi presented Meghalaya stoles and Nagaland shawls to visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Saturday. These objects traditionally represent the “culture and craftsmanship” of the two northeastern states holding assembly elections next week. Additionally, PM Modi emphasised that the gifts reflect India’s rich and varied traditions.
Meghalaya ripped: History, significance, and design
The history of Meghalaya stoles and their royal lineage date back centuries. Their weaving is a centuries-old custom passed down through the generations.
Originally, Meghalaya stoles were woven for the Khasi and Jaintia royalty, who regarded them as a symbol of their power and prestige. The stoles were worn during ceremonies and festivals, and their intricate patterns and vibrant hues reflected the royal family’s wealth and status.
The patterns on Meghalaya stoles were highly symbolic and hold great significance in the culture and tradition of the tribe. For instance, the use of animal motifs such as tigers and elephants represented power and strength, whereas the use of floral patterns represented grace and beauty. The designs on the stoles reflected the beliefs, myths, and legends of the royal family and served as evidence of their cultural heritage.
The fact that Meghalaya stoles have been used as diplomatic gifts is further evidence of their royal heritage. Khasi and Jaintia kings frequently presented these stoles to other rulers as a sign of esteem and goodwill. Due to their significance and value, the stoles were also given as gifts.
Nagaland Shawl: History, significance, and importance
These shawls, which have been woven by the Naga tribes for centuries, are renowned for their vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and the use of traditional weaving techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation.
The Naga shawl is more than just an article of clothing; it is a symbol of the Nagas’ rich cultural heritage. Each shawl reflects the history, beliefs, and way of life of a particular tribe. It is said that the Nagas consider a shawl to be a living entity with a soul and spirit, as opposed to merely a piece of fabric.
Locally sourced materials such as cotton, silk, and wool are used to create the Naga shawl. Traditional weaving techniques utilise backstrap looms, in which the weaver sits on the ground and wraps the loom around her body. This method permits the weaver to create intricate designs by combining various colours and patterns. Weavers frequently work in teams, and the entire community is involved in the weaving process.
The use of geometric and symbolic designs is one of the most striking aspects of the Naga shawl. The designs are inspired by the myths, legends, and beliefs of the tribe, and each design has a distinct meaning and significance.
