Tripura election 2023
In Tripura, the Left Front named its candidates for 47 of the 60 Assembly seats, allowing the Congress to fill the remaining 13 seats. Ahead of the 2019 assembly elections, the two parties have teamed together to challenge the state’s dominant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The CPI(M) will run for 43 of the total 47 seats, while the other Left partners—CPI, RSP, and Forward Bloc—will each field one candidate.

Independent candidate Puroshottyam Ray Barman, a supporter and human rights campaigner, has one seat left in the front. This time, eight CPI(M) MLAs in office—including former chief minister Manik Sarkar (74)—have been “relieved” of their duties associated with the election.

Sarkar will continue to lead the party, according to CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Choudhury, who will run for office from the Sabroom constituency in the South Tripura district. Despite appeals, Sarkar graciously declined to run in the elections, according to Chowdhury.
Choudhury, who was also present at the news conference and was questioned about the front’s failed attempt to form an alliance with the local group Tipra Motha, stated that the Left Front would oppose any move to split Tripura into two.
