Ajit Pawar, the Deputy CM of Maharashtra, has stated that both the late Rajiv Gandhi and PM Narendra Modi were known as “Mr Clean.”
Pawar, who left the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and joined the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition last month, was speaking to reporters in Pune on Tuesday, following his attendance at a ceremony where Modi received the Lokmanya Tilak National Award.
According to him, the citizens of Pune stood on both sides of the highways as Modi’s convoy passed.
“I was in the same vehicle as Devendra ji (Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis) during the convoy. We did not observe any black flags during Modi’s arrival. When it was pointed out that NCP workers (of the rival faction) staged a protest and displayed black flags during the prime minister’s visit, Pawar replied, “In fact, we saw people on both sides of the road welcoming and greeting him.”
“From the perspective of law and order, any prime minister will be concerned with the atmosphere in the country. Nobody supported the current situation in Manipur. The prime minister has taken note of the situation. In addition, the Chief Justice of India has taken note. “Everyone has condemned what occurred there,” Pawar stated.
He stated that the Centre and the Manipur government are working to ensure that the perpetrators of the May 3 incident (in which two women were paraded nude) are punished.
Pawar stated that Modi works 18 hours daily. “During Diwali, while the rest of the country celebrates it at home, he celebrates it with army soldiers on the borders,” he explained.
His work has been on display for the past nine years. At the international level, there is no other leader as popular as Modi. The truth is absolute. I desire advancement. As an opposition party, we can organise protests and morchas, but the final decision rests with those in authority,” Pawar stated.
The NCP leader stated that he joined the BJP-Shiv Sena coalition government in Maharashtra to promote the state’s comprehensive growth.
“No other national figure enjoys the same level of popularity as Modi ji. Look at the infrastructure work he’s accomplished and the respect India receives internationally’, the deputy prime minister said.

“Indira Gandhi was accorded a comparable level of reverence (when she visited other nations)…Rajiv Gandhi had the image of Mr. Clean. Similarly, we are observing this with Modi,” he said.
