Hunter Biden, the son of US president Joe Biden, was indicted for unlawfully purchasing a firearm five years ago while admitting to heavy drug use. Hunter Biden was charged with two counts of making false statements after claiming on forms that he was not unlawfully using drugs in Delaware when he purchased a revolver. A third allegation stated that he possessed the firearm illegally. This may result in up to ten years in prison. Justice Department Special Counsel David Weiss, who has been investigating Hunter Biden since 2018, submitted the charges.
The indictment was handed down nearly two months after a plea agreement between Hunter Biden and David Weiss failed due to disagreements over whether the son of the US president could face additional charges.
Hunter Biden consented in July to plead guilty to two minor tax charges in exchange for probation because he had already paid the government what he owed plus penalties.
David Weiss consented in the same deal to drop the felony gun charge against Hunter Biden if he completed “pretrial diversion” – counseling or rehabilitation.

Why did the plea deal collapse?
The agreement fell apart over the question of whether or not Hunter Biden would have been immune from other charges investigated by the special counsel. These crimes could involve his business dealings in Ukraine, China, and other nations. However, David Weiss withdrew the tax charges and indicated that new charges would be filed in other states as well.
