Records were broken as India defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup final to reclaim the championship after a five-year hiatus. When Sri Lanka batted first, they were bowled out for a pitiful 50 runs because of the incredible six-wicket haul of opener Mohammed Siraj. In response, India completed the task in 6.1 overs with ease. The records that were programmed during the match are shown here.

When Sri Lanka lost its fifth wicket (12 for 5), they scored their lowest-ever ODI against India.

With a score of 12 for 6, Lanka became the first ODI team with an ICC full member to reach the sixth wicket in the series. It was in this match when Siraj claimed his 50th ODI wicket, coming off of 1,002 deliveries—the second-fastest of any bowler in the competition. Ajantha Mendis holds the record with 847 balls.

The opening ten overs of the match saw India take six wickets, the highest for the team in the format to date. After Mendis, Siraj is the only bowler to reach six figures in an Asia Cup ODI. In this match, Lanka’s total score of 50 is the lowest in the format against India. It is also the lowest in any previous ODI final.

With six wickets for twenty-one, Siraj’s ODI record against Lanka is the greatest of any bowler. In the history of the ODI competition, this was only the second occasion that the bowlers took all ten wickets in a match. The second incident occurred in this tournament as well, when Pakistani seamers accomplished the feat in a group match that washed out against India. In the fewest overs of an ODI, Sri Lanka became the first full-member Asian team to be dismissed (15.2).

Siraj’s stats, second only to Anil Kumble’s 6 for 12 in the 1993 Hero Cup Final, are the best by any Indian pacer in an ODI final. Additionally, Siraj made cricket history by being the first Indian to take four wickets in an over. The least amount of balls of any bowler in an ODI, Siraj needed just 16 to take his fifth wicket of the match.

After Ashish Nehra, Siraj is the only player to reach six figures in an ODI against Sri Lanka. India has now won two ODI finals by ten wickets; the other was against Zimbabwe in Sharjah in 1998 (197 for 0). They are now the first team to do it. In addition to being the largest in an ODI final, it is also the largest ODI victory for the Indians in terms of balls left to spare (263).
