The prime ministers of Canada and Australia, as well as the president of the United States, have paid tribute to the prime minister of New Zealand, who shocked the world when she said she would step down as leader of her country.
Joe Biden praised Ardern’s “leadership in advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific” and said that it was because of her leadership that the relationship between the US and New Zealand is “stronger than ever.”
Kamala Harris, the vice president, said that Ardern is a “forward-looking, global leader who has given hope to millions of people around the world.”

Justin Trudeau said that the 42-year-old prime minister’s leadership had made a “incalculable” difference on the world stage, and Anthony Albanese praised Ardern’s “intellect and strength.”
The Canadian prime minister tweeted, “Thank you for your partnership and friendship, and for your empathic, compassionate, strong, and steady leadership over the past few years.”
