Rahul Gandhi disqualified as Lok Sabha MP after conviction

In a big setback to Congress, Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as Lok Sabha MP a day after Gujarat court convicted him in a 2019 defamation case.

Rahul Gandhi disqualified as Lok Sabha MP: A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was found guilty in a defamation case, the Lok Sabha secretariat announced in a notification that the Wayanad MP has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha as of March 23, 2023.

Earlier in the day, the Opposition MPs held a brief meeting in the office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, before marching towards the Rashtrapati Bhavan with signs reading “Democracy is in Danger.” Due to the protest, security in the Vijay Chowk location was increased. Some of the MPs were detained at Vijay Chowk, while others fled the scene, and the commotion eventually subsided.

This morning, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the Lok Sabha. As congressional leaders rushed to the House well to demand that he be permitted to speak, chaos ensued. The Lok Sabha adjourned shortly thereafter.

Today, the Congress is planning a massive demonstration in the nation’s capital and will meet with President Droupadi Murmu and other party leaders to debate the verdict. This morning, opposition leaders gathered in the office of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament.

In the wake of the court’s decision, sources from the Speaker’s office stated that a decision regarding Rahul’s disqualification as an MP would be made once the court’s order was presented. “If a complaint with the order is filed, legal experts will examine it and make a determination,” according to sources.

Thursday, Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in prison in a 2019 criminal defamation case lodged against him for his alleged “Modi surname” comments. Moments later, the court granted him bail and suspended its order for 30 days to allow the Congress leader to file an appeal.
